TOUGH START FOR MINORS

October 1, 2013

Tough start for Minors

Craven FA’s U17 representative side were well
beaten by Barkston Ash FA in their opening West Riding FA Minor Cup Group A
game.
The visitors were the winners of last year’s competition and had
several of their squad still eligible for this game. In contrast, Craven’s
starting line up had only two survivors from the previous campaign in centre
back, and captain, Ben Ashcroft and full back George Lee. Ashcroft and striker
James McCann being the only U17s in an otherwise very young team.
Settle
Utd U16’s supplied goalkeeper Zac Batty, who produced some fine saves throughout
the match, centre back Isaac Wroe, striker Jacob Wroe and left wing Ben Hulse
who all stuck manfully to their tasks despite already playing “a year up” for
their club side! The same can be said of LMS U15 midfielder Nathan Ridding.
Embsay U16’s made up the rest of the 12 man squad with Josh Ellis and Jamie
Coultas showing up well at full back and right wing respectively, Jamie Poulter
giving an outstandingly energetic display in midfield which deservedly gained
him the Man of the Match award, and Angus Ellwood coming off the bench to good
effect in defence.
Stand-in manager Ian Longden said “Our young lads can be
proud of the way they battled on against last season’s champions, particularly
in the second half where we restricted Barkston Ash to two goals and carved out
a number of good chances oursleves. We hope to welcome more players into the
squad over the next few weeks, but most of those who took the field today will
be with us for one, two or even three more years which is very
encouraging”
Squad training is on Wednesdays at Sandylands from 8-9pm, anyone
wanting any more information can contact Ian on 07871 433280.
