Craven Minors Opening Game
October 13, 2009
The opening game for the Craven Minors was played on a damp windswept Farsley Celtic FC ground when their old rivals Leeds FA inflicted a 4-0 defeat.
The Craven Squad is a young squad with only four survivors of last seasons campaign including nine fifteen year olds and their experience at this level will place them in good stead for the remainder of the season. Leeds dominated the game with a display of controlled football that pegged Craven back for long periods and only some excellent tackling kept the eager Leeds forwards at bay, with central defenders Sam Webster and Bradley Fielden working tirelessly throughout the game. Full backs Jake Pollard and Sam Coombs took time to settle to the pace of the Leeds wide men;however Coombs moving forward had an excellent volley saved at the second attempt and further good efforts from Ben Crabtree and Jack Schindler brought good saves from the Leeds keeper.
It was no surprise that the Leeds pressure was rewarded when a cross shot eluded Jamie Oldfield to give the hosts the lead on 29 minutes. Oldfield had a fine game throughout and produced several good saves and showed good composure. The lead was doubled when following a Craven corner the Leeds attack broke quickly and with a defence stood waiting for a free kick after a high challenge a good shot nestled into the net. As half time approached the added time brought a third goal for Leeds when some hesitant defending was punished.
At the start of the second half Schindler had a good shot deflected and Josh Griffiths brought a good save from the Leeds keeper and with Manager Ian Longden ringing the changes Matthew Cardus had a chance but his favoured left foot shot lacked any power and Leeds duly scored their fourth goal following good approach play.
The midfield tried hard without controlling the game and the opportunities that came the way of the forwards were not converted; however the second half display gave for some optimism for the remainder of the season.
Sam Beaumont was voted Man of the Match for his wholehearted display throughout the match in midfield

Minors In Tough Start
The Craven District FA’s U17 representative side play the opening game of their 09/10 Minor Cup campaign this coming Monday (28th Sept) away to Leeds District. the game is being played at Farsley Celtic’s Throstle Nest ground with a 7:30pm kick off. Manager Ian Longden is expecting a tough encounter, commenting: “The draw has seen us placed in a very strong group with away games against Leeds, Halifax and Huddersfield, and home fixtures against Barkston Ash and Heavy Woollen Districts. It’s going to be a stern test for the new squad playing against the district that has won the competition twice in the last three years, but it gives us a chance to avenge last season’s semi-final defeat.” Longden, and coaches Allen Bathers and Adam Longden, have just four players still eligible from last season’s team but Longden adds “The majority of the new lads in the squad will be available for two years, and we have several others who have shown up well in training and can count themselves unlucky not to be included this time, so the future health of the team looks good.”
The squad to face Leeds is:
Sam Beaumont, Josh Griffiths, Jake Kelly, Jack Schindler, Sam Webster (Grassington Jnrs / FC), Ben Crabtree, Bradley Fielden, Jake Pollard (Barnoldswick Barons Jnrs), Chris Bowker, Sam Coombs, Matthew Holt, Jamie Oldfield, David Wolfe (Barnoldswick Town Jnrs / FC), Adam Kelly (Craven Wanderers Jnrs), Matthew Cardus (Settle Utd FC), Josh Robinson (Embsay FC).

Craven Association Football Cup Reports
Craven Cup holders Rimington FC had a safe passage into the next round of this season’s competition with a 6-1 victory at Gargrave. Skipton LMS had a comfortable 6-2 victory over Westmoreland League side Sedbergh Wanderers and Rolls FC had a resounding 8-0 home victory against Horton FC, fellow West Craven side Earby Town also progressed courtesy of a 5-1 home win over Long Preston FC. Skipton Town were always chasing the game against visitors Waddington FC, finally losing 4-3. Another close game saw East Lancs side Colne United score a dramatic last minute winner at Bentham FC, who missed a late penalty, to run out winners 6-5. Newcomers Skipton AFC gave a gallant display despite a 5-1 score line against the experienced Grassington United AFC. The only game in the Norman Pratt Trophy saw Ingleton FC Reserves have a comfortable 4-0 win over hosts Grassington United Reserves who were lacking five regular players.
James Earnshaw notched a hat trick for Bentham FC after visitors Colne United got off to a flying start and were soon three goals to the good; to their credit Bentham pulled two goals back before the break and Colne capitalised on defence errors to have a commanding 5-2 lead; however in a 5 minute purple patch Bentham scored three times to bring the scores level and missed a penalty into the bargain before Colnes last minute winner in a game in which football was the winner.
Earby Town were soon two goals to the good which unsettled visitors Long Preston who took time to get into the game; however it was Earby who scored their third goal. Long Preston did pull a goal back through Paul Mounsey with a header from a corner ahd they were looking the more likely side to score but Earby settled the game with two further goals late in the game. Earby scorers were Jonathan Farrell(2), Gary and Wayne Hooper and Karl Farrell.
Surprisingly Gargrave with a depleted side took an early lead through Ben Brown but once Rimington settled down and equalised they then controlled the game to lead 2-1 at half time. An early second half goal meant that Gargrave was chasing the game which lead to Rimington scoring three more goals to have a rather flattering 6-1 win.
Third Division Horton FC gave a battling performance at Premier Division Rolls FC but were well beaten by a Rolls side who showed their quality, scoring four goals in each half, Jamie Wright scoring four and Mathew Nutter(2), Sean Smith and Damon Clark were on target. A mention must go to the Referee Thomas Davey who had an excellent game.
Newcomers Skipton FC played their part in a good game of football with visitors Grassington taking the honours. To their credit Skipton continued to battle and were rewarded when James Steventon scored from 25 yards. Sam Kimberley for skipton SFC and John Barbour of Grassington were outstanding for their Team and goals were scored by Brian Blackwell (2), Carl Osadzenko, Robert Bradley and Paul Wright.
Luke Howsen netted a hat trick for Skipton LMS in their 6-2 win, further goals from Kyle Telford(2) and Ian Craven. LMS spurned opportunities to make the win more emphatic in a strong Team performance. Former Craven Minor Shaun Gardner scoring twice for Sedbergh.
Skipton Town and Waddington provided a game where the result was in doubt until the final whistle. Waddington always had their noses in front thanks to goals from Brown, Earnshaw, Lord and Holden. In a frantic finish with visitors were 3-1 up and then 4-2 up Town with a late third goal left it too late to take the game into extra time. Towns scorers were Shane Dwyer,Ben Titorenko and John Coates.
In the sole Norman Pratt game Ingleton’s Alex Hartley with a hat trick ensured that his Team progressed to the next round at the expense of Grassington, John Connaughton scoring Ingletons other goal. This was a comfortable win for Ingleton against a gallant young Grassington side, which was well refereed by Hugh Rudden.
Four games were postponed for various reasons but mainly due to Teams having insufficient players available on the day.
