Centenary Cycle completed!

August 6, 2008

To celebrate the centenary of the Craven Football Association and bring awareness to the public of this event in 2009 Executive member Dave Walker and fellow Executive member Mel Exley’s husband Martin and seventeen year old son Oliver took to their cycles last weekend and visited all 26 football clubs in the Craven FA area. Starting at the southern point of Cononley on Friday the trio made their way to West Craven and into the Ribble Valley before an overnight stay at Slaidburn. They were joined by two riders whom Martin Exley had befriended on a charity bike ride from Bradford to Hamm in Germany earlier in the year, money from that event going to Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.

Saturday saw them journey to the northern part of the region and the furthest clubs Sedbergh and Dent, before a steep climb out of Dentdale took them to a overnight stay (and a couple of beers) in the shadows of the Ribblehead viaduct. Sundays ride encountered the softer route from Ribblehead to Settle via Horton in Ribblesdale before country lanes from Gargrave brought them to Upper Wharfedale and Grassington. A pleasant ride through Wharfedale brought the riders to Embsay and finally to Skipton. The entire ride produced only two punctures and considering the weather the party felt lucky to have escaped the heavy showers that hung about over the weekend. An excellent job as Marshall for the whole course was carried out by Mel Exley who gave valuable support to the cyclists. Any sponsor money raised will be donated to the Centenary fund, if anyone wishes to make a donation please contact the Treasurer, Mr Dave Walker on 01756 791991.
